With Ferran Sastre's first victory, Gerard Bailo second and Toby Hales third, riders of Greenfield-Noyes Camp team took all three podium spots in the sixth and penultimate round of the the 2019 Indian Motorcycle DTRA UK Flat Track Nationals.

Gerard Bailo, with two wins, two seconds, a third and a fourth in the first six events of the 2019 Indian Motorcycle DTRA UK Flat Track National Championship has clinched the title with a race still to be run. For only the second time in DTRA history a non-British rider has won the prestigious British Championship, the first time was 11 years ago with the Italian Marco Belli.

His top rival for the crown, teammate Ferran Sastre, did everything he could, winning in front of Bailo and Hales, but, since riders can eliminate their worst result, Gerard knew that hanging on to second was good enough to make him champion.

For Sastre, fastest in timed practice, it was his first victory in the British series. He started from the outside of the first row and by the end of the first lap he was already second behind Bailo. On lap five he took the lead and, from there on, he gradually increased his advantage. With the win he moves provisionally into second place in the points table.

Birtwistle meanwhile, second in the points coming into the weekend, lost two positions in the space of two bends and slipped out of podium contention after dropping behind Toby Hales at the start of lap four. From there he had his hands full with small track specialist Rob Mear, who put in his best performance of the season so far on the 271 meter speedway oval but had to be content with fifth.

With his overtake on Birtwistle, meanwhile, Toby Hales provided the only British representation on the podium whilst continuing his strong recovery in the second half of this season. The youngster from Lincolnshire was second-fastest in qualifying, won Heat Two and the second Semi Final with some comfort, but when he met the Spaniards for the first time in the Final he started badly and left himself with too much work to do.

All of us, from the Noyes Camp, want to congratulate our three riders for an all green podium and specially to Gerard Bailo, for the title. Now there is only the last race that combines the British Championship and the European Championship and, with Ferran Sastre leading that last one, it would be great to win them both. Hopefully, we’ll do it!

George Pickering - Team Owner Greenfield Dirt Track:

“Great weekend for the team!  Having all our three riders on the same podium was one of our goals at the beginning of the season and we were able to achieve it this weekend! But our main goal for the season remains and it's to have our three riders occupying the top three spots in the championship at the end of the year, so these results really helped us to push towards this!
Gerard Bailo also managed to wrap the championship up before the final round with his second place finish. We’re looking ahead to the final round now with great excitement!”

Gerard Bailo #17:

“We knew that we could win the title here. It is a track that I like a lot and where I won last year. This year I found it a bit harder because the conditions of the track were a little different. But in the Main I got a good start and took the lead. When Ferran overtook me I tried to go for him but he had a bit more pace and, since I already knew that second place was enough to win the title. The important thing was to secure the championship as it just got away from us last year. I’m really very happy with the season and very grateful to Greenfield and Noyes Camp, to my Spanish team Kawasaki Catalá, to my family and to all who have supported me and helped me achieve the dream on winning the title.”

Ferran Sastre #215:

"I’m very happy with how the weekend went. This circuit is a good fit for me, like our Spanish tracks, except that the curves had some banking, a bit strange for me. But I was comfortable and strong from the beginning. In the second heat I set the best time of the day and everything was fine until the semi which came right after circuit maintenance. I started from the outside in the main. I had to work my way to the front from third. I was second by the end of lap one and it took me five laps to pass Gerard. But afterwords, I pushed hard until I had a second and a half advantage and was able to keeping it until the end of the race. I finally got my first win in the British. Now I can concentrate on the last round and try and hold my lead in the European Championship.”

Toby Hales #1:

“In qualifying I got the 2nd fastest time behind Ferry. I won my Heat and in the Semi I managed to get another good start and lead the race from start to finish! This gave me first pick in the final so I decided to start on the inside, but I got a bad start and lost traction so I was in 4th after the first corner behind Sastre, Bailo and Birtwistle. On the next lap I got past Gary and pushed hard but couldn’t catch Ferry and Bailo so I finished with a third."
